2010.003 Kindle

Consider my geek-toy of the holiday season, a Kindle2, with two carefully chosen cases. The one you see it wearing here is a neoprene wetsuit with a clear cover, for safe use outdoors and in kitchens. Since I can (and have!) used recipes on this small marvel, I’m really liking that wetsuit! The other case is for everyday wear. Something leather that feels just right in my hand, with enough texture to keep it from slip-sliding away. Amazon would love to sell me books. So simple to buy. So quick to appear magically through the wonders of ‘Whispernet’, on the screen in my hands in just a few moments. But my reading has been scant and superficial this past decade (or two!), and I have much to catch up on that was written decades or centuries ago. Kindle formatted copies of classic literature is available from sites like Project Gutenberg and FeedBooks for free and easy downloading. So my Kindle library is growing. In the process of pounding the virtual pavement looking for the virtual equivalent of ‘used books’, I’ve also stumbled on a recipe site that provided New Year Eve’s artichoke and chickpea stew, and a ‘mobile’ (ie: trimmed down) version of gmail, google maps, and more. Its browser is severely limited, but I’m sure that will change with future versions of the device. I’m looking forward to exploring the Kindle’s image handling. The ones that came with the device, and display on the screen while it is turned off (digital ink requires no power to stay displayed!), remind me of the Wall Street Journal images of years past, before they changed their methods. Not exactly the same, but a similar feel to them. I’m sure my attempts will appear in this Project 365!
