It’s the day after, and we’re spending it with friends from New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut who stayed here after the jam. There are certain benefits to living in the heart of the New England fife and drum scene… like lots of visitors! It was a late night, and morning came earlier than is comfortable, but I wouldn’t want to sleep through the fun. So, since yesterday’s image didn’t show the actual event, I’ve posted one that does.

The thumbnail photo of this post is, incongruously, the nice sunset to which we were treated at the beginning of the jam session. I know it doesn’t match the din of the indoor fife & drum experience, but it was such a beautiful evening that I just had to spend some time out on the beach. It gave me a chance to reflect for a few minutes on the changing light, and to be thankful it wasn’t already dark! And, to also reflect on the impact of the man I’ll never know, and his friends and family who make this jam possible, and who generously continue to give back to their...

Today, one of my co-workers had a puzzle to solve. We had a general idea of the solution, but needed details laid out in black and white. We tried the trusty Pub. 17, we tried the IRS. Finally, I pointed him in the direction of these volumes. In them is found all manner of clarification documentation, neatly parsed by chapter and verse… or rather, chapter, part, section and subsection. By no means the whole code, but enough to point the way. We’re loaded with these kinds of resources, and digging into them is much of the fun. Could this be one of the reasons I love my job so much?...

The spiral shape of the abalone is something near and dear to me. It reminds me that the divine is everywhere, and of the beautiful and almost unfathomable interconnectedness of everything. They’re also just plain beautiful, like so much of the natural world. Not only the sinuous and captivating shape, but also the subtle, luminous colour. Taking this photo reminds me that I would love to spend a day just photographing abalones, to explore those colours and curves.

YUM!! These are the most amazingly sweet and flavourful things! And… they’re not even oranges! They are “Cushman HoneyBell Citrus”, which are a hybrid of tangerine and grapefruit. And, they are (mostly) seedless. They are a gift from my sister, and I am extremely thankful, especially after the south’s recent deep freeze. Perhaps we’ll be short on citrus this coming summer, but I’ll have the memory of these to get me through!

I’ll be seeing a lot of this between now and April 15.
Eighteen years, and I look forward to this time of year at least as much as I did those early years. I’m fortunate to work with a group of fine people, for a very bright business owner. There is something about the combination of people, and the priorities of those in charge, that makes it feel like family. I really can’t imagine working anywhere...

How ’bout that email address, eh? Quite the mouthful. Pretty crazy. Needless to say, I rarely use it. I tell my clients that if they’re sending an email to me at that address, they should leave me a voice mail telling me so. Hah! I remember doing the same thing with my personal email, in 1990 or...

It’s nice to have these in my window sill, reminding me of the sun’s return, and also of the day when my kids and friends sat together at the table, the scents of orange and clove mingling, laughing and poking until their fingers were sticky and sore. That was about a month ago, and now the pomanders are beginning to shrink. Some have a small amount of mold on them, which I think might be because we forgot to roll them in cinnamon. It adds to the scent, but also dries up the skins. But it’s still the orange and clove that we smell, and they’re very pretty in the...
